Planet Red Lodge

The community site by, for, and about Red Lodge, Montana

I was just talking to Chip about the value of a local ride board. With gas prices ever rising (and environmental consciousness too!), doesn't it make sense to cut down on the solo trips? Chip's exploring options for a physical rideboard, but I was reminded that this was one of my goals for this site. So I've made some tweaks to encourage it.

You'll see below that the "Forums" section has been replaced by "Ride Board." Likewise in the list of categories at the top of the screen. So if you need or can offer a ride, click on "Start Discussion" then give it a title, type in your text, and select a category (needed/offered to Billings or elsewhere).

The other key to making the rideboard work is knowing when new offers are out there. You can get in the habit of stopping by the Planet, or you can choose to get automatic notifications when new Discussions start. To do so, go to the main RideBoard page (by selecting View All in the RideBoard box, or by using the navbar up top), and look for the RSS button toward the bottom. Clicking the RSS button will give you a RideBoard feed.

By the way, I converted "Forums" to the RideBoard because I think these forums are handled just as well through blogs. It's so easy to post from your blog that you need not set up a forum. There are still some old forum discussions hanging around the pages and I will soon delete them to give the RideBoard a clean set-up. But the discussions are great so be sure to make lots of blog posts to keep them going!

Let me know how the Ride Board works! If it works well, Chip and I may try to feature it at the Solar Flare June 1 at the Regis.

Thanks Gretchen! I think it's one of those ideas that needs a critical mass to get going.

John, It is almost a year that you posted your ride board message but it is still a good idea. Perhaps Gary could do some promotion in the Rag and some publicity in the CCNews might also encourage interest in the site if it serves to make life a bit easier for some folks.
